The Helm Group's award-winning safety program is a direct reflection of the company's committment to protect our most valuable resource...

....our employees.

Making a Difference
At the Helm Group, we recognize that accidents should be unusual events and that most of them are preventable. Our goal continues to be zero accidents. Our strong written policy and management leadership do make a difference!

#1 Priority
We strive to provide a non-hazardous, accident-free work environment for our employees, customers and the public. Application of our safety program and continuous training insure that safety is never compromised on our job sites. Safety is our first priority.

It’s How We Work
Accident prevention is everyone’s responsibility and is shared at every level of our organization, from the Chairman through to our craft workforce. Managers, supervisors and employees are all trained to identify and correct unsafe conditions and more importantly unsafe work practices. Our project management teams administer our Corporate Safety Program at the project level, with the support and oversight of safety professionals.

We emphasize safety on our projects with the same vigor as quality, morale, cost, schedule and production. Safety is not something we do in addition to the work. It is how we do the work.

The Helm Group has an established worker safety and health program that includes formal training in construction safety, tracking and formalized reporting. Corporately, this program has full-time oversight and management.

The Helm Group’s safety program is based on the belief that every employee is entitled to a safe, respectful and enjoyable work environment. We recognize our responsibility for the physical well being of our employees as established in our core values; and federal and state regulations. We further recognize the vital role that effective accident prevention measures play in an efficiently run project. Our managers and supervisors are responsible and accountable for the implementation of safe work procedures and maintenance of a jobsite free from hazards that would endanger people or property. Support of this objective is a condition of employment.

Our Corporate Safety Program:

  • Defines formal responsibility for accident prevention. Responsibility flows through the organization along functional lines.
  • Accident prevention provisions including safety orientation, education and training for supervisors and employees.
  • Guidelines for pre-job planning including a copy of all pertinent regulations.
  • Weekly jobsite safety inspections conducted by management and certified safety staff.
  • Specific policy requiring that each new employees receives orientation in the Helm Group Safety Program, and signs off for acknowledgment.
  • Emergency procedures, including the requirement that each superintendent hold current first-aid and CPR certification.
  • Policy requiring the holding of weekly jobsite/toolbox safety meetings.
  • Procedures for investigating and reporting accidents
  • A drug and alcohol precention program that includes pre-employment, post accident, and random testing.
  • Proactive Safety Incentive/Bonus Program

Safety isn’t just a topic for slogans at the Helm Group, it is our top priority in everything we do. We constantly review the way we work to reduce and eliminate the risk of injuries or accidents, because we realize our work can be dangerous. In our frequent safety training employees are encouraged and rewarded for finding ways to reduce risks in every task, and to speak up if they see risky conditions or behavior. We know our emphasis on safety is effective, because our safety record is well below the industry average.
We have received several awards from industry associations and government agencies recognizing our safety achievements. We’re proud of the awards, but we are more proud because it means our fellow workers are going home safe and sound each day.

Our Statistics
The Helm Group uses a variety of programs to control and monitor our safety performance. Our safety performance much better than the industry average and is near best in class.
